The City of Jackson Fresh Start Program assists those with felony convictions to find employment. Fresh Start staff conduct individual and panel interviews, check backgrounds and references, and refer to job readiness training to assure that our participants are ready for employment.
Fresh Start staff follow-up with employers to assure that job placements are working well. Employers are encouraged to take advantage of the many incentives which are provided for those businesses that employ ex-offenders by the State Department of Employment Security.

Provides services to African-American fathers who have been released from prison in the past 180 days and their children less than 15 years of age.
The MILA: Mississippi program consists of weekly group activities lasting three months. All participants, including both fathers and their children, will participate in weekly group sessions focused on enhancing their success, strengthening their social networks, building family relationships, and creating a concise plan to accomplish each of their goals. Participants will also take part in volunteer opportunities around the community as well as workshops and seminars to open doorways to their success. The children who participate will be heavily involved in weekly children focused programs and family activities including a movie night, sporting event, outdoor field trip, and volunteer service project. These family activities will be a time for fun, networking, and making future plans together. Participants will also be expected to keep in contact with program staff throughout the duration of the program.

Mississippi Prison Industries Corp. Mississippi Prison Industries Corp. (MPIC) is a state agency that assists individuals who are soon to be released from prison. The program is open to prisoners currently employed by the Department of Corrections’ Industry Program and is geared toward addressing employment issues only. An Offender Placement Coordinator meets with prisoners to develop an individual employment plan, including creating a job resume, cultivating interview skills, and acquiring job-seeking tips, to be implemented upon the offender’s release. Post release contact is maintained by the agency to provide additional assistance if possible.

Case managers can help people find a job, coordinate employment services, and they administer emergency financial assistance programs as well. Programs can help meet a number of needs, such as rent, provide free food, or zero interest loans may be issued to pay security deposit fees. Other resources include Head Start and more.
Another program is the Rural General Public Transportation Program, citizens living in rural areas of Hinds County are provided a safe, reliable, and accessible means of transportation so they can attend to their daily living needs. While emphasis is placed on serving elderly and disabled individuals, convenient and affordable transportation is available to all citizens living in rural Hinds County (Bolton, Byram, Clinton, Edwards, Raymond, Terry and Utica).
